The Electrolyte Question
Marketing took a real mechanism and stretched it. Here's what the evidence says about hydration, and where women's nutrition still gets guessed.
Electrolytes were, not long ago, a fairly niche tool for endurance athletes sweating for hours. Now they are sold as a daily requirement for hydration, focus, energy, and general optimisation [2]. That drift — from a real, specific mechanism to an everyday must-have — is one of the most reliable patterns in wellness marketing. It's worth learning to spot, because the same move shows up everywhere in nutrition.
Start with what's actually true about electrolytes, because the marketing is built on a genuine mechanism. For certain endurance athletes, losing sodium and fluid over long, hot efforts, electrolyte replacement is a legitimate tool [2]. The problem is not the mechanism. It's the extension of it — the reframing of a specific-use product into an everyday requirement for hydration, energy, focus, productivity, and general health [2]. A recent Sigma Nutrition episode takes this apart directly, examining why many of the common use cases for electrolyte products are unlikely to actually require one [2].
This is the pattern worth internalising, because it repeats across nutrition. Take a real physiological process, describe it accurately, then quietly expand the population and the situations it applies to until it sounds universal. The claim never becomes false, exactly — it just stops being relevant to you, sitting at your desk, drinking water. The tell is when a tool with a narrow evidence base gets sold as a solution to a problem most people don't have.
The same logic distortion shows up in how we talk about food more broadly. There's a tendency to treat foods as if they compete in isolation — one beats another, the loser gets banished. But the honest question is always "compared to what?" [6]. When you increase one food, you're usually displacing another, and the health effect depends entirely on that trade [6]. Where this gets genuinely consequential is in the areas where the evidence base is thin to begin with. Much of what we consider established sports-nutrition guidance — recommendations for calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and supplements — rests on research conducted largely in men [1]. A narrative review this past December made the point plainly: the distinct physiological, neurological, and hormonal changes across a woman's life cycle meaningfully affect nutritional needs, yet current dietary frameworks largely lack sex-specific guidelines [1]. So while a product promises precision hydration, the underlying science for half the population is still, in places, an educated extrapolation.
The strength-training literature shows the cost of that gap. Women face particular challenges in bone development and loss, driven by estrogen's role, which leaves them with lower peak bone mass and higher fracture risk, especially after menopause [5]. Resistance and weight training are effective strategies for maintaining bone health [5]. Yet societal biases — fears of excessive muscle gain or a loss of femininity — still deter many women from training in the way the evidence supports [5]. Here the problem is the mirror image of the electrolyte story: an intervention with strong, relevant evidence gets under-adopted because of misconceptions, while a product with narrow evidence gets over-adopted because of marketing.
Put those two together and you get a useful filter for the whole category. Before adopting any nutrition or fitness practice, ask two questions. First, what is the specific mechanism, and does it apply to me and my actual life — or to a marathoner in the heat? Second, compared to what — what am I displacing, and was that thing serving me? Neither question is glamorous. Both cut through most of the noise. The sustainable version of eating and moving well is rarely the version being advertised, because the advertised version usually depends on you believing a narrow truth applies universally. It doesn't have to. You're allowed to drink water, lift something heavy, and let the mechanism decide whether the product is for you.

Next time you reach for a supplement or functional drink today, ask one question before you buy or consume it: "compared to what?" [6] What are you displacing, and is the specific mechanism relevant to your actual day? Often the honest answer is water — and that's fine.
