[Weekly Tasks (Deep Clean and Organise Touchpoints)]
Pick a day each week (maybe the day when the house has less cooking, or an afternoon free) for a slightly deeper pantry refresh:
Clean Surfaces: Wipe down the exterior of containers and shelves, especially in areas prone to drips (for example, around oil and sauce bottles). Crumbs tend to accumulate in corners — vacuum or wipe those out. You don't necessarily unload entire shelves (that's monthly), but do spot-cleans. For instance, lift the spice tray and wipe under it. Clean sticky jar exteriors (honey jar, we're looking at you!) with a damp cloth.
Restock and List: Check inventory of common items against a shopping list. The weekly audit described earlier is essentially an SOP — do it the same day each week. Many Lifestyle Managers do this the day before grocery shopping day. Bring a checklist (could be a printed form listing common items, and you tick if you need to buy). Check levels of grains, flours, spices, etc., and mark items running low. Look at fresh stock of eggs, bread too (though those might be separate kitchen supplies, it's good to incorporate them into the routine). This shopping planning becomes systematic.
Re-align and Label: During the week with multiple people using the pantry, some items might get out of place. Take 10 minutes to put everything back in labelled spots. If you find something consistently out of place, maybe it needs a new dedicated spot that's more intuitive — consider adjusting for convenience. Ensure labels are still legible and in place. If any jars have lost their label or new jars have been introduced, label them. This is also when you can update any digital inventory (if you keep one manually, though some do it monthly instead).
Check for Freshness: Glance through fruits/veg in the pantry (onions, etc.) — remove any that have gone bad. If you use root veggies storage (sand, etc.), stir or check it. Also, open a random container or two to inspect contents (like smell the besan to ensure no mustiness; look at rice for any bugs). These spot checks are preventative. If anything is suspect, plan a thorough investigation or sun-drying that week. Generally, if you follow the monthly deep clean, weekly should rarely find issues, but it's a safeguard.
