Steps
List your top 1-3 hobby activities you want to make progress on this week. (E.g., "Photography — go on one photo walk; Cooking — try a new recipe; Reading — finish 2 chapters of a novel.")
Review your schedule for each day and identify possible openings. Even 30-minute slots count. Mark at least a couple of slots in the week for hobbies.
Write down a specific plan for each chosen slot -- which hobby and what you'll do. Be as specific as possible (day, time, activity).
For example:
Monday: During lunch, 12:30--1:00 PM, read a novel (relax in the park).
Wednesday: 8:00--9:00 PM, work on my quilt project (sew patchwork while watching TV).
Saturday: 10:00 AM — 12:00 PM, long bike ride on trail (fitness + nature photography).
Sunday: 4:00--5:00 PM, practice piano (learn a new song).
By writing this down in a weekly view, you can see if you're overloading some days and adjust. It also gives you something to look forward to each day. Stick this plan on your fridge or desk, or set phone reminders for each hobby appointment.
At week's end, reflect: Did you enjoy those times? Do you need to adjust for next week (maybe the morning block didn't work, try evening, etc.)? Over weeks, you'll find the rhythm that works for you.
We introduced the formula earlier. Here it is in a worksheet form to fill out for various parts of your day:
Identify 3 daily anchor points that could cue a hobby action. Common anchor points: After I \[wake up / eat breakfast / arrive at office / eat lunch / finish work / eat dinner / put kids to bed / brush teeth\].
Now complete these sentences:
After I \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_, I will \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ for \_\_\_ minutes.
After I \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_, I will \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ for \_\_\_ minutes.
After I \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_, I will \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ for \_\_\_ minutes.
For instance:
After I eat lunch, I will walk around the block and take nature photos for 15 minutes.
After I brush my teeth at night, I will write in my journal for 5 minutes.
After I start the coffee maker in the morning, I will stretch or do yoga for 5 minutes while it brews.
Post your habit stack where you'll see it (or in a habit tracking app). Each time you perform the sequence, give yourself a small check or reward. Soon, it will become automatic.
This template is like a typical weekly calendar, but with pre-marked blocks for different life categories (Work, Family, Chores, and Hobbies/Me-time). You can draw one or use a digital calendar:
Fill in all immovable obligations (work hours, classes, essential routines).
Look at the remaining blank spaces and assign some of them as "Hobby time." Even if it's 2 hours a week total, block it out. Colour-code it if you can (e.g., green for hobbies).
In the notes section or on the block itself, note which hobby you'll do.
For example, your time-blocked week might look like:
Wednesday:
\- 6:00 — 7:00 AM: \[Hobby\] Morning run with dog
\- 7:00 — 8:30 AM: Breakfast, get ready
\- 8:30 — 5:30: Work (meetings, etc.)
\- 5:30 — 6:30: Commute & pick up kids
\- 6:30 — 8:00: Dinner & family time
\- 8:00 — 9:00: \[Hobby\] Painting in home studio (spouse puts kids to bed)
\- 9:00 — 10:00: Relax and wind down
Seeing this on paper helps you mentally commit to it. Treat those \[Hobby\] blocks like important appointments. If something encroaches, reschedule the block rather than delete it. The act of visualising your week with hobby time included is powerful — it shifts you from a mindset of "maybe if I have time" to "this is part of my routine."
If all these frameworks feel like a lot, here's a simple checklist to get started this week:
Choose one hobby you want to focus on (you can always add more later).
Schedule at least two time blocks for that hobby in the next 7 days. Write them on your calendar.
Create one habit stack: "After \[some daily event\], I will do \[hobby\] for a few minutes."
Tell someone or set a reminder about your plan, for accountability.
When the time comes, start with just 2 minutes if you feel resistance — then keep going if you want.
End of week: celebrate what you did! Even one session is a win. Then plan your hobby time for the following week.
Each week, build on this. You can integrate more frameworks as you feel comfortable. Perhaps add an implementation intention for a bigger goal (e.g., "If it's the first Saturday of the month, then I will go to the hiking club outing"). Or refine your schedule based on what you learned. It's an iterative process.
Integrating hobbies into daily life ultimately comes down to being intentional with your time and valuing your own interests enough to give them space. You have learned that through smart scheduling, habit hacks, and prioritisation strategies, even the busiest schedule can have openings for passion projects. You've seen evidence that making time for hobbies is not only possible but beneficial, boosting creativity, confidence, and well-being. And you've gathered practical tools, from weekly planners to tiny habit tricks, to turn these ideas into action.
As you finish this chapter, take a moment to visualise your ideal week. What hobby would you be thrilled to devote a little time to? Picture yourself engaged in it — the satisfaction, the stress relief, the joy. Now, know that with the strategies here, that can be your reality. It won't happen by accident, but it will happen if you plan for it and protect that time.
Start small, stay consistent, and be flexible. Over weeks and months, you'll find that your hobby is no longer an afterthought — it's a regular, cherished part of your life. You might even inspire those around you to do the same, creating a ripple effect of balanced, enriched lives.
In the words of a Harvard Business Review author, "When you find a little time for a creative hobby break, make it guilt free. After all, everyone stands to gain." (Dinardi, 2019) So go ahead -- embrace your hobbies and enjoy every minute you give to them, guilt-free. Your busy life will be all the better for it!
